When you become a real estate agent, you may feel intimidated by the idea of dressing up or dressing professionally every day. You may feel like you are going to be judged, and that can be overwhelming. However, looking professional every day is not as hard as it sounds when you plan and buy an excellent core wardrobe.

Here are a few wardrobe tips for a successful real estate agent.

1. Dress for success.

Real Estate agents are considered business professionals, so it is essential to dress like a successful business person to instill confidence in your clients. This means wearing mens suits and ties. You don’t have to wear a tuxedo, white shirt, or wool waistcoat. You do, however, want to wear a dress shirt, pants with pleats, a necktie with a tie bar, or a bow tie. You should not wear sneakers, mismatched socks, or a lounge suit while working with clients or showing houses. Buy suit elements that can be easily interchanged, so you can quickly and easily put together an outfit without having to buy a ton of new clothes.

2. Pay attention to the details.

Real estate agents like David Lindahl, who has been involved in over 550 deals, know the importance of paying attention to the details. When it comes to the way you dress, this means making sure your clothes are free from rips or stains, your shoes are shined, and your tie coordinates with your outfit. While it’s true that the way you dress has no accurate reflection on your ability to buy and sell houses, it directly impacts the way others perceive you, which affects your ability to buy and sell homes. Having a matching tie bar and cuff links are the kinds of details that may seem small, but people will notice and be impressed.

3. Carry extra clothes in your car.

Keeping extra clothes in your car will help when you spill coffee on yourself, slip in the mud, or let your shirt taste test your lunch. Accidents happen to everyone, and having extra clothes is a quick and easy way to solve most mishaps. It’s also good to carry a lint brush and wet wipes. If you walk through mud, you can use the wet wipes to quickly clean your shoes and the bottom of your pant legs if you need to. An extra comb and deodorant can also be your saving grace if you get too hot or messy during the day. Being prepared will allow you to get through the workday looking professional from start to finish. Be sure to replenish your car supply when you use something, so you don’t find yourself without something you need.

4. Watch the weather channel.

Be prepared for whatever weather is expected, so you don’t get caught unprepared. You can be sure to bring an extra jacket if it’s supposed to get cold, or an umbrella if there is a chance of rain. If it’s supposed to get warm throughout the day, you can wear lighter dress options to reduce the chances of getting sweaty. Knowing what the weather is supposed to be will give a significant advantage. Always having your extra items in the car will cover any unexpected weather changes.

The best thing you can do to dress for success as a real estate agent is to be confident. Even if you are in business casual attire, walking and talking with confidence, making eye contact, and having a firm handshake will go a long way to impress your clients. Always have business cards readily available and walk into a meeting with your paperwork already prepared. The more organized you appear, the more impressed clients will be working with you.
